Out of Season at Clayton Lake; New Work for Life Along Route 11 Art Show

Out of Season at Claytor Lake

acrylic on canvas
24 x 20 inches

On one of the last warm days last fall, we traveled to Clayton Lake to walk the trails, explore the shore line and picnic.  I was also on the look-out for some inspiration for artwork for the upcoming show "Life Along Route 11" with the Double Line Painters of the Blue Ridge at the Arts Depot in Abingdon. VA from May 4- June 11, 2016.

I discovered the summer rental sailboats had been pulled on-shore and placed on "saw-horses" with tarps draped over them.  The random numbers, quirky boat positions, and tarps falling off made me want to capture this moment on canvas.    Utilizing the color combination of the cool blue tarps, the warm glow of the fallen oak leaves, and neutral grey sky became the color plan throughout the painting.  Once all areas of the canvas were covered, it was time to really push the color to make it  unexpected as well as something to grab your attention.

And as they say "it is all in the timing" as here is a photo of the same location from last week.  The tarps are gone, masts have been removed and boats turned over covered in snow.  Can you see how different the color choices would have been if this scene had been my inspiration?

The snow is now completely gone thanks to some heavy rain.  Think "spring" everyone.
And thanks for stopping by my blog.
